It Shook The Whole Building As If We Were A Walnut

“During the war, I performed my job during the war like everybody else. And I taught high school students. And all the high school students from our municipality went to here next to the Cathedral, the music school. So we were very close  to that marketplace where that famous shell landed. And I was there when it landed.

I felt that something was wrong. It was too quiet. So I left the class went down the stairs and came to the entrance of the school and at that moment the school bell rang and all the pupils started pouring down the stairs. They wanted to go home but I blocked the the entrance with my body and I told them nobody leaves the building. Everybody just go back- something is gonna happen. And that's when this big shell landed and it shook the the whole building as if we were a walnut.

I organized them afterwards that only two by two they could leave the the school because I thought they shouldn't be a bigger crowd. Two by two I let them go home. And then I also left the sirens started blaring and I also left and came to the marketplace and it was horrific. There was one man one man standing holding somebody's head and I remember how the skin was was hanging down that head. That's the most memorable thing I remember from my entire career.” -M
